This Internationally significant public sculpture was acquired by the City of Atlanta to further its mission to offer diverse high-caliber artwork that is accessible to all. The Centennial Yards Friday Vibe arts walk will include live music, a community led mural with Alexandria Artistry, live painting with Jamie Calkin, and a set from DJ Shabazz celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop. Moderated by Talib Shabazz of Earwax Records, he will be in conversation with the likes of DJ Toomp, DJ Wis, and DC The Brain Supreme, understanding how they took cues from the DJs from New York City and Los Angeles and incorporated their own style that was distinct to Atlanta. ATLiens Visit Planet MARS captures the early origins of Hip-Hop communities in two creative capitals—Atlanta and Marseille. As Hip-Hop began to spread beyond New York and Los Angeles in the early 1990s, communities around the world began to claim it as their own, and with that agency, began to frame their own identities within the culture.
In this exhibition, photographers Shannon McCollum and Jean-Pierre Maero present images and videos from the early 1990s to early 2000s from their personal archives that offer rare access to the foundational artists, spaces, and moments of Hip-Hop in Atlanta and Marseille, respectively, and help compare and contrast the creative output of cities that would become contemporary cultural capitals.
Join us for a reception and discussion with the artists and curators, as well as a DJ set with DJ Djel (Marseille) and Salah Ananse (Atlanta).
This exhibition will run from 9/22-10/20 and is presented by Villa Albertine as part of City/Cité Atlanta x Marseille and France-Atlanta, in partnership with AMI/Friche la Belle de Mai. Recalling the ring shout as the cypher, Charmaine Minniefield collaborates once again with hip-hop artist Toni Blackman. Based in both Brooklyn, NY and Dakar, Senegal, Blackman will participate in a 30-day artist residency in Atlanta. She is joined by Senegalese artists, Bideew Bou Bess, made up of brothers Moctar Sall, Baidy Sall, and Ibrahima Sall. Through workshops and performances, Blackman the group will mix traditional Senegalese music, World music, and Hip-hop to acknowledge the emcee as griot by connecting ancestral traditions across time and space. The work explores Black expressive culture as ancestral memory. Presented by The Praise House Project. All Ages.

Located on the grounds of Glenn Memorial Church, the next installation of the Praise House Project by artist-activist Charmaine Minniefield is presented in partnership with Emory University with funding from the National Endowment for the Art to acknowledge the African American history of Emory University. The site-specific public art is modeled after a historical praise house - small, wooden structure commonly used for worship by enslaved peoples across the American Southeast. The interior features archival images within a fully immersive, digital rendition of a Ring Shout, a traditional African American worship and gathering practice in which congregants would gather in a circle to shout and stomp upon the wooden floors, creating a communal drum, secretly preserving their cultural identity and African indigenous traditions. The Praise House Project at Emory honors this tradition of Remembrance as Resistance, while igniting scholarly and artistic inquiry on campus and beyond.
The Praise House is open for a special preview during Elevate Atlanta on October 14th and 15th, and then will be available for viewing from October 20 -December 15. 2023. For more info: PraiseHouseProject.org
